Ledge Top Farm has been growing chemical-free vegetables and small fruits since 1977 in Wilton, New Hampshire.
We began with a little less than three acres of mostly forested land by carving out a small garden space. As the years passed into the early 1980s we also raised pigs and turkeys. By the mid 80’s through the 90’s, the focus switched to pick-your-own raspberries as more land was transformed from forest to farm. After 18 years, the pick-your-own raspberry plants were discontinued for vegetable production.
In 1990, a 4-acre rock-free field in Amherst became available for use. Part of this field was used for vegetable production, especially potatoes. This area also became the site of the farm stand, and is known as Frog Hollow Farm on Courthouse Road in Amherst. From June to October, vegetables are sold fresh daily on the stand in the afternoons. By mid- to late June there is usually enough produce to stock the stand daily. Only products grown on the farm are sold at the stand, with the exception of corn. When corn is in season, it is purchased from another farm.
For all the products grown by Ledge Top Farm and Frog Hollow Farm, we use only natural fertilizers. For insect control, we never use chemicals; naturally derived extracts and biological controls are used when necessary. If insect pressure is too great on a vegetable, we just stop growing it. We take great effort to grow vegetables that are free from chemicals. For example, last year, we grew our squash and cucumber under screen to prevent insect pressure. This proved successful enough that we have extended the practice to other crops. We’ve added four new high tunnels since 2008, in addition to our original 96–foot greenhouse.
